This qualification will give you the skills you need to apply for your Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Mate Fishing Vessel - Unlimited Certificate of Competency (COC).

Entry requirements

Academic requirements

Applicants should either have

  • A minimum of 14 credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
  • A minimum of 8 credits at level 2 or higher in English; 4 credits must be in Reading and 4 credits must be in Writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards.

OR

  • Any equivalent qualification (New Zealand or overseas) recognised by NZQA.

OR

  • Evidence to support an applicant鈥檚 ability to successfully undertake the diploma with a reasonable likelihood of success, particularly with regards to mathematics and physics skills.

OR

  • Hold a New Zealand Offshore Watchkeeper or New Zealand Offshore Master Certificate of Competency or equivalent.

English language requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 (with no band score lower than 5.5) issued within the last two years, or equivalent.

Other requirements

Applicants should be aware that there are MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements for the MNZ licence which their programme contributes towards.

In order to undertake the Fire Training Courses (FFT311, FFT511) applicants must also:

  • Be physically fit and capable of participating in the practical training component
  • Students must provide a Medical Certificate issued by a General Practitioner, or provide a Seafarers Medical Certificate or equivalent.

In order to undertake the SSC511 STCW Proficiency in Survival craft and Rescue Boats course, applicants must also:

  • Be physically fit and capable of participating in the practical training component

Students must provide a Seafarers Medical Certificate or equivalent.
