The Southern Cross Health Trust is offering scholarships for domestic 膩konga who study at Whitireia in the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing M膩ori, and Bachelor of Nursing Pacific programmes.
The scholarships include:
- Contribution to your fees
- Weekly stipend allowance when out on placement
- Annual health and well-being support allowance
- Priority clinical placements with a Southern Cross hospital
- Mentoring and additional learning opportunities

The scholarships are available as follows:
- Three 3-year scholarships for 膩konga entering their first year of study for Semester 1, 2026. One for Bachelor of Nursing, one for Bachelor of Nursing M膩ori, and one for Bachelor of Nursing Pacific.
- Three 2-year scholarships for 膩konga entering their second year of study for Semester 1, 2026. One for Bachelor of Nursing, one for Bachelor of Nursing M膩ori, and one for Bachelor of Nursing Pacific.
- Three 1-year scholarships for 膩konga entering their third year of study for Semester 1, 2026. One for Bachelor of Nursing, one for Bachelor of Nursing M膩ori, one for Bachelor of Nursing Pacific.
How To Apply
Application Requirements
Please complete the application form available through the Whitireia and WelTec website. Applicants will be asked to provide their legal name on the application form. You will be required to include the following with your application:
For Year One applicants:
- A transcript of your NCEA results (or equivalent secondary qualification) to date, or a transcript for any previous tertiary study not completed at Whitireia and WelTec.
For all applicants:
- A brief personal statement in writing (max 500 words) explaining why you believe you should receive this scholarship. Please describe any cultural or other community activity or personal circumstance relevant to the eligibility category you are applying for, as well as future career goals.
- A short CV (maximum two pages).
The scholarship seeks to improve social and cultural mobility in nursing education and contribute to the diversification of the profession. The intention of the scholarship is to assist nursing students who identify with a diverse or underrepresented group or from a background of hardship, and who have, or may have, experienced barriers to their access to education because of this (see additional information).
Students accepted for a scholarship are encouraged to:
- Participate actively in the non-financial benefits of the programme.
- Consider applying for a job with Southern Cross on completion of their studies.
- Students accepted for a scholarship are expected to:
- Pass all exams and assessments.
- Provide updates and stories relating to the study to Southern Cross with support from Whitireia and WelTec, including an end-of-year update for each year of study under the scholarship.
- Provide feedback to Southern Cross that can be used to improve the programme.
- Advise appropriate parties of any issues relating to their study or the scholarship so that appropriate support can be provided.
What you receive
Each scholarship will include the following:
- A contribution of $5,000 towards tuition fees, provided that the academic year is not covered by government funding (fees-free).
- $500 per week towards living expenses during clinical placement (pro-rata by day for Year 1).
- $500 per year towards personal health and wellbeing expenses.
- Funding the Nursing Council Examination Fee for those who are in their final year of study.
- Priority clinical placements in Southern Cross Healthcare hospitals and subsidiaries, subject to a separate written agreement between Southern Cross Healthcare and recipients, including relevant background checks where appropriate.
- The opportunity to explore a part-time role under a separate employment contract in a Southern Cross Healthcare hospital or healthcare service provider that offers flexibility during clinical placement. Note: Clinical placement cannot take place in the same department as part-time work.
- Involvement in the Southern Cross Student Mentor Programme.
- Additional group learning opportunities, such as online/in-person workshops with senior leaders about specific topics and clinical learning sessions.
Entry requirements
膧konga who demonstrate a passion for nursing and are experiencing personal challenges or disadvantages that may prevent them from undertaking or completing their studies are invited to apply.
To be eligible for the First Year of Study Scholarship, you must:
- Be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident and have lived in New Zealand for at least the previous two years.
- Have applied to study full-time at Whitireia and WelTec in either the Year 1 Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing M膩ori, or Bachelor of Nursing Pacific programmes in 2026.
- Have a provisional or confirmed offer of place commencing in 2026.
- Be from a diverse or underrepresented group or from a background of hardship, and who has or may experience barriers to access to education because of this (see Additional Information).
To be eligible for the Second Year or Third Year of Study Scholarship, the applicant must:
- Be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident and have lived in New Zealand for at least be currently enrolled in either the Whitireia and WelTec Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing M膩ori, or Bachelor of Nursing Pacific programme
- Have a provisional or confirmed offer of place for full-time study in 2026.
- Be from a diverse or underrepresented group or from a background of hardship, and who has or may experience barriers to access education because of this (see Additional Information).
