Ng膩i Tahu are the iwi comprised of Ng膩i Tahu wh膩nui; that is, the collective of the individuals who descend from the five primary hap奴 of Ng膩i Tahu, Ng膩ti M膩moe and Waitaha, namely K膩ti Kur墨, Ng膩ti Irakehu, K膩ti Huirapa, Ng膩i T奴膩huriri and Ng膩i Te Ruahikihiki.
Te R奴nanga o Ng膩i Tahu was established by the Te R奴nanga o Ng膩i Tahu Act 1996 and services the tribe's statutory rights and ensures that the benefits of the Settlement are enjoyed by Ng膩i Tahu wh膩nui now and in the future.
Throughout the South Island there are 18 local r奴nanga. An elected representative from each of r奴nanga makes up Te R奴nanga o Ng膩i Tahu, the governing body overseeing the tribe's activities.
